Saturday 18th September 21
BUET CC (Bangladesh) 1, Dundee City A (Scotland) 9
A comfortable opening round for Dundee City A against a side graded well below Dundee City A who had players over 2000+, including two IM`s! Five boards were in play
A strong line up of Andrew Greet (tracked down to a distillery on Islay to confirm his availability), Richard Polaczek (with Broadland no longer playing in this competition), Andrew Wright (fresh from a piano recital at the Edinburgh Fringe), Ed (‘puzzles‘) Spencer and Steve (‘classic games’) Hogg, turned out against newcomers Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology on Saturday 18/09/2021 with Declan Shafi on a train to Cambridge and hence unavailable. The heavily out graded BUET team put in some plucky performances, and took one notable scalp, but ultimately succumbed 9-1.
Congratulations to (in board order top to bottom) Andrew Greet IM (2-0); Richard Polaczek IM (2-0); Andrew Wright (2-0); Ed Spencer (1-1) and Stephen Hogg (2-0).
A big thanks you to BUET Chess Club for a good match and we wish them well for the rest of the competition!
Dundee City A’s next opponents, Rooty Hills Chess Club from Sydney, Australia are also new to this competition and very much maintain its international nature with time zone considerations necessitating a morning slot on 10/10/2021.
Sunday 19th September 21
Dragon`s Fire B (Wales) 3½, Dundee City B (Scotland) 14½
Like Dundee City A, this was a comfortable opening round in the end. The only two “B” teams in the league meeting in the first round probably suited both teams and I think a lot of juniors were involved in the Dragon’s team while Dundee City had more experienced players in depth. Ten board’s seemed to be in play just before the clock started and both teams were showing ten players. But once the clock started we only had nine players showing for Dragon’s Fire “B” so not sure what happened but it meant our tenth player, Ana Belen Seijas Otero missed out which was unfortunate as she can only play at weekends and was really looking forward to the match!
Congratulations to (in board order top to bottom); Mikey Grove (2-0); Graham Mooney CM (2-0); Andy Rowe (2-0); Robert Jackson (2-0); Ray Noble (2-0) and Subhayu Banerjee (2-0).
Dariusz Kosznik won 1½ – ½; Leyton Hackney drew 1-1. Rishi Vijayakumsr J10 lost two nil which is most unusual. Just goes to show no matter how good an up and coming junior you are, there will always be blips along the way! Rishi will learn from this as he always does!
Thank you to Dragon’s Fire B for a good game and we wish them well for the rest of the competition. Dundee City B`s next opponents are “NEW ZEALAND 2020”
Brilliant start for both our Dundee City teams in round one but we know it will get tougher as the rounds move forward.
