TAFCA – Tayside and Fife Chess Association
Report – week 17 – ending 10th Feb 22
Only nine week s left in the TAFCA season 2021-22 for everybody to make their move to win something! It’s been a stressful campaign for Castlehill teams with so many teams in division one which has caused its own problems online. Still things are looking up now we have opened our doors at last for OTB chess again! It will take a while to build up again not helped by changes in leadership, illness and the pandemic, but we will get there!
TAFCA
Division One
Well what can you say as Dundee A sit top of division one with 6 wins out of 6! They are a giant of a team and have been breaking all the TAFCA records. It’s hard to see anybody challenging them at the moment or the near future unless other clubs can find some top players! The Dundee A team is made up of Jacques Ophoff (2257) CM; David Findlay (2150); Stephen Hogg (2027) and Ed Spencer (2016).
What a line up!
Castlehill B are on their coat tails but 3 points behind, with Castlehill A in third place after a few dodgy results!
Division Two
Kirkcaldy A & Dundee C sit top the division on 13 points each, three points clear of St.Andrews Uni D on 10 points. Both Dundee C and Kirkcaldy A have still to play each other! Both Castlehill G and H sit in the bottom two places but are learning all the time!
TAFCA ALLEGRO CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
After four events out of six have been played, Richard Kynoch (Castlehill) leads the way on 16½ points, 5½ points clear of nearest rival Ed Spencer (Dundee). But with two events left it’s still an open race! Come on Richard!
Events left: Castlehill on 24th March 22 & St.Andrews on 7th April 22.
J.R.CHALMERS GRAND PRIX MEMORIAL
This event is in memory of our late president, Jim Chalmers who along with Jean Chalmers are largely responsible for all the chess we enjoy now in the TAFCA area!
Richard Kynoch (Castlehill) must be doing something right as he tops this table on 20½ points, 4 points clear of…yes you have guessed it, Ed Spencer (Dundee)! Still a long way to go as this event includes the all TAFCA league matches and the TAFCA Allegro Championship Series! The points you score (excluding byes) go towards the J.R.Chalmers Grand Prix event. It’s a nice trophy to win and I can count my blessings when I (Ray Noble) was the first winner of this event back in 2012-13! The defending champions are Andre Babin and Jan Barron-Majerik (both Castlehill).
There is still one event to play and that takes place (hopefully!) on Tuesday 12th April 2022, 7:30pm start; finish 9pm; Time-control 5 minutes + 3 seconds on Lichess.
The “TAFCA TEAM BATTLE” end of the show, show proved popular last season and hopefully will do again. All TAFCA teams do battle on the same night against each other in an Arena type event. Dundee A are the defending champions!
Visit the TAFCA website for all the latest news, but for up to date insider news I recommend the home page of Castlehill website and click the tab “TAFCA Winter Online League 22-22”. It is now updated every week (sometimes every night!).
Thank you to all players, teams and clubs involved in what has been testing times for chess in more ways than one, especially so for organisers with a lot more work involved in “ONLINE” chess!
