TAFCA LEAGUE ONLINE – Weekly Match Report
Week 9 – 01/09/20 – Div 1
Dundee Allosaurus` 4, Castlehill Bandicoot`s 0
This match was brought forward a week due to the 4ncl next Tuesday. The result was not unexpected, but always disappointing when you don’t manage to nick something like a drawn game?
Well played all the Dundee Allosaurus` players who did not take us lightly and were very professional when it came to the kill! More like “Assassins Creed”, than chess! As the Allosaurus` march on towards the title, it was just another day in the office for them!
Congratulations to Jacques Ophoff, Stephen Hogg, Ed Spencer & Alan Borwell. Commiserations to the Bandicoot`s, Michael Dugdale, Andy Rowe, Ray Noble & Paul Shafi. This time they could not live up to our name (Bandicoot`s!).
Bring on Newport Knights Athletic next!
Week 9 – 01/09/20 – Div 2
Dundee Datousaurus` 0, Castlehill Cobra`s 4
The Cobra`s moved into top spot in division two after a blood bath win against Dundee Datousaurus`. Grading wise it was a non starter, but you still have to do the business on the chess board and your opponents will never make it easy for you, especially if the are from Dundee Chess Club!
Congratulations to Subhayu Banerjee (1483), Peter Sallai (1472)est, captain Ed Walton (1429) and Colm Hawkins (1350) who managed to checkmate Scot McKenzie with 1 second left on his clock! Phew!
This win combined with the Castlehill Dragons result puts the Cobra`s in a very strong position now. Come on the Cobra`s!
Club wise on the night it was honours even:
Castlehill Chess Club 4, Dundee Chess Club 4!
Week 9 – 03/09/20 – Div 2
Castlehill Dragons 2½, Dundee Centrosaurus` 1½
Well this was a surprise result against a team sitting in 2nd place in the league on a perfect 4 out of 4 wins! Indeed Dundee Centrosaurus` are one of the favourites to take the division two title!
Board 3: Arthur Grant (846) was out gunned and out played on the night by Thibault Rosazza (1224) est. Thibault played the Petroff Defence and it seemed Arthur had no idea how to play against this tricky defence to e4.
Castlehill Dragons 0, Dundee Centrosaurus` 1
Board 2: Marten Kats (1091) brought the Dragons back into the match with a great win against out of form George Burton Snr (1350). Mr Kats purred at the prospect of playing against the Budapest Gambit and this time the gambit was not a “pest” to Marten! Well played sir!
Castlehill Dragons 1, Dundee Centrosaurus` 1
Board 1: This was a belter of a match with Norman Waugh (1161) playing like we know he can and giving Bruce Wallace (1430) a hard time! So much so Norman was clearly winning, with a Queen and 7 pawns against Queen, Knight and 2 pawns. Norman had a lot less time and may be this hampered his thought process as he started to make heavy weather of the situation.
Norman had missed a forced win on move 42… when he play Qg1+
but 42.f5 was the move! 42……Kh4; 43.Qf2+ Kg5 44.Qg1+ Ng2 (the only move) 45.QxN Kf4 46.Qf2+ Kg5 loses the queen! and checkmate there after.
After not playing f5, Bruce Wallace managed to get in a check which looked dangerous as a Queen and Knight always work well together. Norman was still winning, but given his time was going down fast, he opted for allowing the perpetual check and securing a draw from a won game. (57.Qc3+ Kf5 58.Qc5+ Kf6 59.Qc3+ Kf5 etc)
The correct move was to give up the c2 pawn with 57……Qe5 and white had no more checks and black wins the knight! But then again, it is so easy after the event and with no time pressure! Well played Norman!
With one game to finish it gave the Dragons a chance of a result of some sort. But would he live to regret not going for the win…
Castlehill Dragons 1½, Dundee Centrosaurus` 1½
Board 4: Norrie Carroll (928) must have thought he had been hit by a tornado as Rishi Vijayakumar J9 (482) hit him with everything including the kitchen sink! But Norrie “tapped” into his experience and made a fight of it against the young chess master (The force is strong in this one!).
In the end Rishi was too strong and took the honours and gave the Dragons an unexpected win against the Centrosaurus`!
Great result by the Dragons! Congratulations to Norman, Marten, Arthur & Rishi on an incredible team effort!
This win moves the Dragons into 3rd place after the Newport Knights Belle`s only managed a draw against St.Andrews Bee Movie who get their first point of their league campaign!
Keep it going lads, their all there for the taking apart from Castlehill Cobra`s may be?
