TAFCA LEAGUE ONLINE – Match Report
IT`s ALL GOING DOWN TO THE WIRE IN DIVISION TWO!
Div 2 – Wed 16th Sept 20; 7:30pm
Newport Knights Belle`s 1, Castlehill Dragons 3
Congratulations to Castlehill Dragons who are on fire at the moment and punching well above their weight! Last time they upset early league leaders Dundee Centrosaurus`with a 2½ – 1½ win, this week they upset Newport Knights Belle`s with another hot performance! Dragons captain, Daniel Coleman lead by example with a win in fewer than 15 minutes! It was a blood bath and a nice mate against a King driven into the middle of the board! Daniel was supported by Marten Kats on board two who was purring like a happy kitten, and the junior “Talk of the town” Rishi Vijaykumar J9, gave a lesson in how to play chess to his shocked opponent! Norman Waugh on board one had the hardest of matches and in the end had to admit defeat. Congratulation Dragons on another against the odds win, which has now catapulted the Dragons in to a possible chance of promotion (if two places?) with only one match left!
The Dragons face Dundee Datousaurus` in their final match and a win along with Dundee Centrosaurus` losing would give them a 2nd place finish in division two ahead of Dundee Centrosaurus!
Great team performance Castlehill Dragons!
Div 2 – Thurs 17th Sept; 7:30pm
Castlehill Cobra`s 2, Kirkcaldy B 2
Due to a couple of players not able to play, the in form Castlehill Cobra`s had to play with a weakened team as players moved up a board and a Dragons player played up. Not ideal when you are going for the title. But of course there is a twist in the tail and all is not what it seems! Yes players moved up, but the incoming Dragons player was none other than young junior Rishi Vijaykumar J9 who has been giving out master classes to all his adult opponents! Tonight was no exception as Bruce Geddes found out for the 2nd time in this campaign! Rishi had already beat Bruce with the black side when he played for the Dragons. This time Rishi made the slam dunk beating Bruce with the white side. Not much more you can say about Master Vijaykumar!
Board One: Subhayu Banerjee has been in good form for the Cobra`s and is an excellent number one board player, but this time it was not to be as Kirkcaldy B`s Paul Anderson took the honours this time.
Board Three: Innes Ford was up against the very experienced Kirkcaldy Stalwart, Peter Selbie. It was a tough match in which Innes will take something from, but unfortunately not the points!
It was all down to the board two match between Colm Hawkins and Euan Henderson.
The burning question on everyone’s lips was:
Would Kirkcaldy get the win and the match? Or would the Cobra`s get the win and salvage the draw?
Colm is a new player to the club, but he has a cool head on him as it showed in this match against a tricky opponent. He is also an aggressive player on the board and in his game he did a brilliant Bishop sack, then a Rook exchange sack to deliver a very, very good checkmate! Great game and combination Colm!
Castlehill Cobra has yet to taste defeat and did well to salvage a draw against Kirkcaldy B who deserved better for their efforts! Sometimes it`s getting something from a match that was not going your way rather than the easy wins that define a season and who will be crowned champions!
It all comes down to the last week of division two. Castlehill Cobra`s sit top of the division on 9 points, with Dundee Centrosaurus` in 2nd place on 8 points, followed by Castlehill Dragons in 3rd on 7 points.
Tues 29th Sept: Dundee Centrosaurus` v Castlehill Cobra`s
Wed 30th Sept: Kirkcaldy B v St.Andrews Bee Movie
Thurs 1st Oct: Castlehill Dragons v Dundee Datousaurus
Newport Knights Belle`s have finished their campaign and can do no more!
The big one is “Centrosaurus` v Cobra`s” a league decider. Cobra’s just need a draw to win the division and become champions! Centrosaurus need to win to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat! If both sides have their best players, it will be a close one indeed! Should be a good match to watch live on lichess.org.
The Dragons on the other hand need their club mates (Cobra`s) to do them a favour and beat Dundee Centrosaurus on Tues in their match and then on Thurs the Dragons will need to beat Dundee Datousaurus in their own match to finish Runners-Up!
Now that’s how you finish a campaign! The one good thing for the Cobra`s is it is still within their own hands to do! The Dragons need a helping hand from Cobra`s, but if they get it, it will be back in their own hands on the night of their match!
It will either be the week that was! Or the week that was not?
As for division one, we still have two weeks left!
Come on Castlehill!
