TAFCA TIME HANDI-CAP KNOCKOUT FINAL 2017-18
Castlehill C v Perth (at Castlehill CC)
Monday 9th April 2018
Finding a date was proving difficult so Castlehill rolled back the years and arranged for the chess club to be open on Monday to get the final played. Monday was always a popular night when we were a two night club!
Perth came a calling with a very strong side indeed. They had a couple of new players whose grade does not yet reflect their playing strength. Perth had a 4 minute advantage on boards 1 & 2. They also had a 2 minute advantage on board 4, while Castlehill had a 4 minute advantage on board 3.
what a great start by Castlehill as we took it 3-1 to give us a great start and put a lot of pressure on Perth to do something in round two! Andy Rowe on board 1 and Ray Noble on board 3 both won, while Craig Nicol (board 2) and John Lynch (board 4) both getting a draw.
Castlehill 3, Perth 1
Castlehill just had to hold tight and let the pressure build up on Perth to push for a win. Craig Nicol was the first to finish and you guest it…he drew again against Andrew Sutherland! That was a great start to the second half for Castlehill C to give us a 3½ point lead with 1 point needed out of three matches left to take the title.
Castlehill C 3½. Perth 1½
Next to finish was the board 4 match between John Lynch and Andy Cowan. John was winning but lost on time to give Perth a life line! John played well over both matches and supported the team well on board four.
Castlehill C 3½, Perth 2½
It all rested on the last two matches. They think it’s all over? It is now as Ray Noble on board 3 did the double against G. Le Feuvre to give Castlehill C the TAFCA Knockout Cup! Ray pushed back the years against a strong opponent and was over the moon to win both matches!
Castlehill C 4½, Perth 2½
Andy Rowe put the icing on the cake, like Ray doing the double against his opponent, Ian Washington to give Castlehill C a comfortable 5½ – 2½ win in the end.
Congratulations Castlehill C on winning the TAFCA Knockout Final against Perth Chess Club. Perth were worthy finalists and should be applauded for reaching the final and giving it their all.
So Castlehill C aka Andy, Craig, Ray & John make sure we as a chess club did not have a barren year in TAFCA!
Well played everyone!
