CLUB NIGH REPORT: Thurs 2nd August 2018
Congratulations to Ray Noble on becoming ladder champion 2017-18! Colin Young was runner-up for the 2nd year in a row ( a repeat of last years final!), with Cameron Wilson in 3rd and Scot McKenzie 4th. This makes it back to back victories for Ray who has only missed one final since it started!
The main battles were Ray v Colin with Ray managing to nullify Colin`s French for a draw and some how win with black against Colin! With Ray only needing a draw in his last match against Cameron, the title looked to be in the bag.
But disaster struck as Ray found himself 3 pawns down to Cameron and not only that, Cameron seemed to be in a great position. Ray was shaking his head wondering what the hell was going on! But experience does count for something and Ray has been her before. He just kept complicating the positions, waiting for the mistake and it did come about! When it did, like a surgeon on acid, Ray went for the throat and did not miss to take the match and the title. Cameron could only apologize to Colin for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!
Once again a great night’s chess and fair play to the four finalists’s for making it a success. 6 matches of allegro chess in the space of 3 hours is taxing mentally and only the strong survive to the end.
But the season is not over yet as we still have the summer and 5-Minute to decide!
