FIDE Online Olympiad – Scotland – News
Division Two – 14th-16th August 20
Scotland is taking part in the Fide Online Olympiad taking place on Chess.com, and has reached the division two stage of the competition which is fantastic! In the Scotland squad is Castlehill`s very own Declan Shafi (U20)! What an incredible honour to represent your country at the highest level and how proud are Castlehill Chess Club and it`s member of Declan!
Scotland is in division two, pool E with 10 countries involved. Scotland is seeded 5th in the pool. Time-Control: 15 minutes + 5 second increments.
All matches are played on six boards divided into four categories:
A (open) – boards 1 and 2: B (women) – boards 3 and 4: C (open U-20) – board 5: D (girl U-20) – board 6.
(6 reserves are also permitted but must also fit into the each of the above categories and assigned to boards 7 – 12)
Round 1: Argentina 3½-2½ Scotland
So close, so far against the number 6th seeds! Declan did not play.
Round 2: Scotland 1-5 Colombia
Well out played by 4th seeded Colombia! Declan did not play.
Round 3: Montenegro 2-4 Scotland
At last Scotland get a win at their third attempt, taking down the number 9th seeds. Declan (2166) was playing in his first match and won against a 2109! Well played Declan! But the “STAR” performer of the match, Monica Espinosa Cancino (1563) who’s win on board 6 against an 1868 was the reason Scotland got the win in my opinion. Fantastic team result and an outstanding individual result under pressure by Monica against an opponent far higher graded! Wonderful stuff!
Scotland play England today (15/08/20) at 17:00 hrs UTC and hopefully Declan will get to play after his win against Montenegro! But first a match against Ecuador at 16:00 hrs UTC!
Come on Scotland! Come on Declan!
