CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 7th Feb 19
Another 40+ night at Castlehill again! They all seem to be coming out the woodwork these nights and long may it continue!
We had an amazing 3 TAFCA matches on, plus club competitions and junior coaching.
Castlehill A 1½, Perth A 2½
A disappointing night for our “A” team not helped by defaulting a board due to player no show? It`s a big blow as Perth A are one of the main contenders for the title along with the invincible, Dundee A. Well I say invincible but, no…read on.
Div 1 Castlehill C 2, Dundee A 2 (The history makers!)
What a result by our “C” team against Dundee A! Not only that we only had 3 “C” team players and had to draft in a player from our “D” team on bottom board! This is a remarkable result by the only “C” team in division one, and against a team that has not dropped a ½ point in 4 years (so the rumour goes!) so this is like a victory not a draw! Reigning champions Dundee A were in shock as it was at one point looking like Castlehill C might win it!
1: Keith Rose (1495) 0 – 1 Dr David Findlay (2184)
(Keith had mission impossible against this Dundee legend!)
2: Ray Noble (1482) 1 – 0 Alan Borwell (1889)
(This was a fantastic result for Ray. Alan made an early mistake and for a change Ray did not mess up near the end! (He was sober too!)
3. Roy Morris (1446) ½ – ½ Alastair Dawson (1798)
(It was like old times as Roy turned back the hands of time to his bygone era of chess! On his day he is a very dangerous player. Great draw against the professor!)
4: Colin Young (1360) ½ – ½ James Anderson (1671)
(Coin helping out our “C” team had a tremendous game against Jim and at one point seemed to have a winning advantage? In the end Jim pulled out all the stops and Colin with a King and Knight against 2 pawns (I think?) managed to stop any of them promoting and living with just 2 seconds on his clock! Match drawn. Colin is only 1360 but is Mr Dependable and a very hard player to break down. Great result Colin!
Next up for the legend busters is Kirkcaldy A. They must be quaking in their boots now. Lol!
Result – Div 2
Castlehill E ½, Dundee C 3½
Castlehill were well out graded on all boards and just could not defy the odds. Well a part from Ed Walton (1242) on board one who drew with Robert Burnett (1409). Robert is a very experienced player who is always difficult to play against, so well done Ed!
Round 3 result
Alan Brown (ug) 0, Charvi Kanodia J16 (701)
Charvi loves her chess and is desperate to improve her grade. She proved to be too strong for new member and beginner Alan on the night. Well played Charvi!
While all of this was going on there were some skittle matches on and some junior coaching all be it ad hoc by some of our adult members. A big thank you to them for stepping in while Keith & Ray had matches!
Another successful nights chess at Castlehil and of course a great result by our “C” team holding the TAFCA giants of chess Dundee A to a draw!
Lets do it again next week and bye for now!
