CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 30th May 19
Another night to remember with over 30+ down for a game of chess! Not only that we had a visit from a blast from the past, Dave Kleppang! Most of you will not know him, but Dave was a long time member of Castlehill and a very strong player. He moved to the USA about 8 years ago and at last he paid us a visit. It was good to see him again!
Tonight saw the start of the Bob Dunn Summer tournament with a fantastic 25 players entered this year! We have 5 juniors playing in the Summer with two of them only 7 years old!
BOB DUNN SUMMER
”Shock of the night!”
Subhayu Banerjee (1403) 1, (1583) Jan Barron Majerik 0
What a result by Subhayu beating the number one seed! Jan is a very strong player and Subhayu was over the moon with his victory. The shock of the tournament so far and it`s only the first round!
Keith Rose (1495) 1, (1360) Colin Young 0
As you would expect with a match involving Colin, it is always a war of attrition! Keith got an early advantage and just had to take his time converting it to a win. Colin on the other hand was making sure he had to work for it!
“Get out of jail card played!”
Gordon Thomas (1350) 0. (1482) Ray Noble 1
I thought we were playing Chess, but somehow Ray produced a “Get out of Jail” card and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat! Gordon should have won, but the match was very, very complicated, just how Ray like’s it! Despite Gordon being a pawn up it was hard to find a way through all the complications! Gordon did miss something but the ending was dreams come true for Ray as Gordon playing what looked liked a perfect move, fell to a cheapo trick, but a nice one none the less! Cheshire Cat and Ray? You could not tell the difference!
Roy Morris (1446) 0, (1242) Ed Walton 1
Grading wise it looks a shock result, but shock it was not as Ed is a player who`s grade does not reflect his ability! Well played Ed!
Scot McKenzie (515) 1, (UG) Alan Brown 0
Could have gone either way, but Scot got the win!
”Bricking it match!”
John Lynch (1064) 1, (UG) Rishi Vijayakumar J7 0
Well it was one of those trip wire pairings which John managed to avoid! Rishi is one for the future, but this time John held his nerve and boy was he relived!
“Experience v Youth!”
Norman Waugh (1188) 1, (701) Charvi Kanodia J16 0
This was Norman`s first game of the season, but he showed no rustiness at all against a very good junior!
”Battle of the Amazons!”
Ananthi Ramachandran (ug) 0, (926) Lisa Paton 1
“Battle of the juniors!”
Ramit Kanodia J11 (757) 1, Alexander Barron-Majerik J7 (ug) 0
Cameron Wilson (1302) 1, (ug) Norrie Carroll 0
Norrie could not reproduce the greatness of last week, but he made a game of it against Cameron who has improved beyond words!
Next week is the 2nd quick-play grand prix competition with a time control of 3 minutes & 2 seconds, plus an increment of 3 seconds each move. See you then!
