CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 27th Feb 20
Tonight we had one TAFCA match on at home, and one team away from home. We also had the Junior Club Championships, and of course the ladder!
Div 1: Castlehill A 2, Castlehill C 2
What a fantastic result for Castlehill C which gives them a much needed point in their relegation battle with Dundee B & Newport Knights A! There was even the small chance of steeling the win!
Board 3: Colm Hawkins (1350) 1, Michael Dugdale (1536)e
It was a very interesting game, but as time went on it looked like Michael was taking the lead, only for him to move his attacked rook off the back rank and leave his other rook for the taking! Colm of course did just that and good night! Great first blood by Colm and Castlehill C!
Castlehill A 0, Castlehill C 1
Board 1: Roy Morris (1431) 0, Andre Babin (1865) 1
Andre gets his team back in the match with a regulation win! Andre is a fine player who slowly improves his position at the expense of his opponents and like a boa constrictor he strangles them to death!
Castlehill A 1, Castlehill C 1
Board 4: Andy Rowe (1536) 1, Gordon Thomas (1331) 0
Gordon was playing up from the “D” team and gave Andy a run for his money! Indeed it could be said, with best play he might have salvaged a draw? But in the end Andy’s vast, vast experience (he has been around a long, long, long, long time!) proved to be the winning factor! Unlucky Gordon!
Castlehill A 2, Castlehill C 1
This gave Castlehill A the advantage with just the board two match to finish and it was Darius Kosznik in the “A” team corner, the odds on favourite to win! But at the chess board not far away, we have a young chess player in which the force is strong… (Cue music!) Wait sorry I thought he said Yodi, he meant he does yoga! Oh well onward on forward!
Board 2: Dariusz Kosznik (1772) 0, Ed Walton (1429) 1
What a result for Ed against one of our best players! I did not see the game until the end, but Ed was a piece up and while Dariusz may have got some pressure for this, Ed kept his nerve as the end neared. He had a big time plus but it was beginning to slip away as Dariusz pulled out every thing he could think of bar the Death Star! In the end Dariusz under so much pressure, lost on time trying to find the killer move that might save a lost position, Ed Walton you are now a Castlehill “C” team legend!
Castlehill A 2, Castlehill C 2
That point made up for the dropped point last time against Dundee B and gives them a fighting chance to stay up. Indeed I think it keeps it in their own hands and if they win their last match against Newport Knight A, they would stay up no matter the other team’s results!
Cracker of a match and hopefully a dagger in their rival’s hearts! Given the strength of division one, it would be a great achievement once again if our “C” team did survive! Over the years our Castlehill C team have beaten the odds by staying in division one for so long!
Best “C” team ever!
Div 3: St.Andrews Uni B 3, Castlehill F 1
Not an unexpected result given the table positions. I do not know much more a part from the following… The winner for Castlehill was Master Rishi Vijayakumar J8, who like last week was a little late, but still won like a true showman! We are blessed with some very good juniors and I know if Rishi keeps his interest, he will be one to watch in the future. Only eight years old and playing like that!
JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
It was a three way tie on the night for points as Rishabh Akula J14, Alexander Barron-Majerik J8 and Prithvi Sudarshan J13 all finished on 2 points.
It was not a good night for currant leader in all three tables as Ray Noble only won 1 out of three matches tonight!
Robert Jackson was on fire tonight as he won all three of his matches!
1st Robert Jackson 3 pts
2nd Keith Rose 2 pts
3rd Ray Noble 1 point
4th Alan Brown 0 pts
Well that’s it for now and we shall see you all again next Thursday for another round of chess! But once again congratulations to Castlehill C and to our two hero’s on the night, Colm Harkins and Ed Walton!
