CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 24th May 2018
Good night’s chess with 27 players down. We had one Random Knockout match on, but the night belonged to the 5-Minute Grand Prix.
Roy Morris (1531) ½, Innes Ford (ug) ½
Great result for Innes grading wise. Roy is a very experienced player so Innes can take a lot from the match. Both players had to play a 15 minute tie-break match and Roy won that one to progress to the next round.
5-MINUTE GRAND PRIX
10 players took part in the 2nd 5-Minute Grand Prix. In round one all the top players won apart from one! Yes Scot McKenzie took the scalp of Ray Noble who finished 2nd in the 1st 5-Minute. Alastair Dawson was looking good leading by a half point from Andy Rowe. With 3 rounds left. Then in round 7, Alastair suffered a shock loss to Cameron Wilson to hand Andy Rowe the lead with two rounds to go. But this is a 5-minute tournament and it is never over until the last move is made! After getting an unexpected life line, Andy Rowe then lost to Graham Atkins in round 8! It all went to the last match in round 9 and it involved the two big guns, Alastair Dawson and Andy Rowe! Alastair gets the bragging rights this time and takes the 2nd 5-Minute Grand Prix. Ed Walton had a great 5-minute finishing in 3rd place, while Colin Young was in 4th spot!
