CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 21st Feb 19
It was a special night with over 40 players down at the club tonight. Three TAFCA matches and a special guest, Scottish Champion for the past two years, Murad Abdulla (2256) FM!
Murad was here to play Declan Shafi in a rearranged Dundee Club Championship match. Castlehill Chess Club is honoured to have him playing chess at Castlehill. We are even more honoured and happy that our own Declan Shafi J18 (2114) beat FM Murad Abdulla (2256) on the night.
Murad & Declan despite being so young are old adversaries and in their younger days Declan held his own in their battles. But that changed when Murad reached 10/11 years and he improved dramatically, so much so he is the Scottish Champion for the past two years! Despite Murad being a significantly stronger player on paper, Declan has done well against him (may be a clash of styles?). While not the highest rated player Declan has beat, it is a big scalp to take down. Scottish Champion for past two years and an FM! Congratulations Master Declan Shafi!
Castlehill C 1½, Castlehill B 2½
1. Keith Rose (1495) lost to Dariusz Kosznik (1749)
2. Ray Noble (1482) won against Paul Shafi (1569)
A noble performance from Ray who pounced on a mistake by Paul to get a rare win in their battles against each other over the years!
3. Roy Morris (1446) lost to Robert Jackson (1564)
4. Ed Walton (1242) got a great draw against Andy Rowe (1545) the draw aficionado! Andy “Always happy with a draw” Rowe said it was tactical but Ed deserved it!
Castlehill F ½, Newport Knights A 3½
Castlehill F were out gunned by a big, big margin, but they did get a half point more than expected with newbie Apostolas Mentzos playing a blinder considering his inexperience. Well played Apostolas!
Castlehill D 1, Perth B 3
A disappointing result on the night and one that will affect their title chances!
Four players took part in a Ladder tonight and Haoqi Zhang J8 won all 3 of his matches to take 1st place! Alexander Barron-Majerik J7 was 2nd only losing to Haoqi! Tom Grosset J11 and new kid Craig J9 shared last place on ½ point each. Alexander is a very promising junior and as for Haoqi? He is an enigma, one minute he seems not to be interested and the next he surprises you with some really good chess! We are a lucky chess club with the juniors we have and Alexander and Haoqi are good editions to the team!
Castlehill are a very lucky chess club with a big membership and a lot of junior members as well. We have very busy club nights with a lot going on including coaching. Lets keep the good work up and keep building for the long term future of our club.
