CLUB REPORT: Thurs 14th March 19
Another busy night as you would expect with 36 players down. We had two TAFCA Knockout Semi-finals on, plus Junior coaching and skittle games.
Castlehill had two teams reach the semi-final stage and in opposite sides of the draw. Unfortunately both got knockout out at this stage. There is always next year and maybe fate will be on our side!
Castlehill D 2, Dundee A 6
Congratulations to Dundee A for defying all the odds with the time handi-cap disadvantage to progress to the TAFCA KO final! Castlehill D made a fight of it and maybe could have made more use of the time advantage but in the end class won the day! Castlehill D did well to reach the semi-final stage in their defense of their title, but it was not to be!
Castlehill B 3½, St.Andrews Uni 4½
Congratulations to St.Andrews Uni for reaching the Knockout final after a very, very close battle against Castlehill B. In the final they will meet Dundee A. It was close at the half way stage with both teams sharing the spoils 2 – 2. But in the last four matches, St.Andrews Uni showed they have what it takes to play under time pressure and win! Hard luck Castlehill B it just was not meant to be this year! The star for Castlehill B was draw master, Andy Rowe who guess what drew both his, no wait a minute he “WON!” both his games. Now that is something special for Andy! Maybe this is a new look Andy Rowe the chess player? Then again probably not!
Ray Noble gave a master class to the juniors that were down at the club on simple checkmate patterns involving Fools mate; Scholars mate, Smothered mate, Legal`s mate, Suicide checkmate and “Thunder from a clear sky” mate! (did not know Ray knew any of that stuff!)
Lets do it all again next week!
