CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 13th Feb 20
It was another busy night at Castlehill with two TAFCA matches on, some Club Championship and Random Knockout matches, plus the ladder! We also had the pleasure of junior’s galore making sure silence was not the order of the night!
It was a night of what could have been? In the end it was more like ”a symphony of sorrowful songs”!
Castlehill Chess Club welcomed two teams from Dundee Chess Club in two very important matches and what a night it was indeed! Dundee out graded both Castlehill teams but gradings as we all know mean nothing when the pressure is on!
Castlehill C 1½, Dundee B 2½
This was a relegation double header with Castlehill C holding a 3 point lead over Dundee B, Our “C” team has been punching above it`s weight for years in the top division, while Dundee B going down would be a shock indeed! Squeaky bum time for both teams!
Castlehill C got an early start with Colm Hawkins (1350) winning on board 4. On board 2 James Anderson (1611) was getting the better of Ed Walton (1429) and in the end won it! Captain Colin Young (1380) on board 3 seemed to be on the wrong end of it against Gordon Robertson (1554) including time! But for some reason Gordon decided to play quickly and started playing bad moves. In the end Gordon was probably losing the game, but Colin’s time was nearly out so a draw was agreed.
The match that decided the tie in the end was the board one clash between two of the most experienced players in the city of Dundee. Frank Stevenson (1647) and Roy Morris (1431) gave it their all and in the end it was looking like a draw, which would have made the match a 2-2 draw and kept the gap 3 points.
Unfortunately for Castlehill and Roy it was not to be as Roy after a long hard battle made the mistake after losing his train of thought and duly lost to give Dundee B a big, big life line and move just one point behind Castlehill C!
A draw from this position with black to move unless you think not?
Roy was very disappointed, but as we all know, these things happen and it was just Dundee’s night! Congratulations to Dundee B on winning this double header and unbelievably their first win this season!

5.Castlehill A v Dundee B
Castlehill D 1½, Dundee C 2½
Given Castlehill D`s grading, sitting top of the division, unbeaten is an epic achievement! Dundee C out graded Castlehill D and in the end was worthy winners on the night. Before tonight, Dundee C were 2 points behind, but crucially have played two game more.
With this win Dundee C move to equal first place with only one match left, while Castlehill D have three matches to go. Perth B are also in the mix in 3rd place.
Castlehill D are still odds on to get promotion to division one, and hopefully as champions, but they will need to hold their nerve for that one. Congratulations to Dundee C on a fine win to keep their hopes alive for promotion and the title!
Castlehill D you are punching well above your weight and your players and newbie captain Cameron Wilson (1323) who won on the night against Ray Flood (1509) should give yourselves a pat on the back for getting in this position with just a few games to go!

Six players took part in one section on the night and it was a strong field if you don`t count Ray Noble!
Round one saw the shock of the night with Master Rishi Vijayakumar J8 making short work of Subhayu Banerjee! While Rishi never won another game, he did give Ray Noble and Keith Rose a run for their money! If he keeps improving at this rate, it will not be long before the pupil becomes the master!
Subhayu did not let this loss affect him as he won his next two matches including a fine win against Michael Dugdale who was all out of sorts tonight, losing all 3 of his games! It`s never easy being the number one seed is it Michael!
Standings on the night
1st= Keith Rose & Ray Noble 3/3
3rd Subhayu Banerjee 2/3
4th= Euan Murray & Rishi Vijayakumar 1/3
The last match to finish was Euan v Ray with Euan in a won position, but very short of time. With Euan playing all the wrong moves (pawn moves instead of the King!), Ray felt he was still in with a chance. With Euan only having 9 seconds left on his clock and about to make his move, Ray piped up “Now think about it Euan!” which was a very sneaky thing to do! Bang, Ray wins on time and Euan was left reeling. Still it`s a learning curve for Euan with Ray pulling out all the stops and showing his vast experience in competition chess and playing with a crowd around the board!! Tut, tut, speech play Ray!
Another exciting night at Castlehill Chess Club Dundee. Congratulations to both Dundee Chess Club teams on fine battling wins on the night!
That`s it until next week when we do it all again!
