CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 12th April
Another busy night again at Castlehill with 32 players down.
Div 1 result
Castlehill B 2½, Perth A 1½
this was the last TAFCA match of the year and what a way to finish it off by upsetting the odds and beating Perth A! Euan Dawson (1727) on board 1 got a good draw against the strong Martin Gourlay (1907); Ben Volland (1706) on board 2 beat the tricky Ian Washington (1512); Keith Rose (1539) on board 3 had a mare by his own admission and lost to Andrew Sutherland (1482).
But the match that had it all was the board 4 match between Cameron Wilson (1170est) (Castlehill) and Aaron Gourlay (1200) (Perth). Aaron was 4 pawns up and coasting when inexplicably he got a bit confused and placed his King on a square which gave Cameron checkmate next move! You lucky … boy Cameron! Nice win no matter how you get it as Aaron is a very good up and coming junior who won the J.R.Chalmers Grand Prix trophy last year! Just one of those things that happens to all players no matter how strong sometimes.
Round 5 Results
Alastair Dawson 1, Robert Jackson 0
Jim Anderson 1, Ramit Kanodia J10 0
Alastair`s match with Robert was a cracker and well worth the watching on the night. Jim Anderson (1626) ended Ramit`s (725) dream of becoming Castlehill Club Champion at the age of 10! You would think no contest but that was not the case! Ramit played really well and Jim was not at his best which lead to a very good position for Ramit against Jim with an upset looking on the cards! Alas Ramit`s inexperience and youth, lost out to Jim’s experience and vast knowledge as befits a man of Jim’s mature years! Alastair Dawson on the board next to this match thought Ramit might have had the win, but Ramit could not see it. May be Jim had everything under control but it did not look like it and after the match you could see the relief on Jim’s face!
Well played Ramit! If you can carry on improving you are going to be a force to be reckoned with. Castlehill Chess Club is a very lucky club to have you with us.
Results Round 1
Ray Noble (1398) 1, Marten Kats (1170) 0
Ray was in a lost position after move 9, only for Marten to somehow lose his way and in a Rook and pawns endgame, Ray was too strong for Marten and duly checkmated him. Ray had the look of “How did I get away with that rubbish!”
Graham Atkins (1317) 1, Subhayu Banerjee (1359) 0
Not sure what happened here but it looked at one point that Subhayu should have won a piece after a pawn fork, only for Graham to somehow come out on top! I only report this stuff; I don’t make it up honest!
Charvi Kanodia J 0, Innes Ford 1
Charvi put up a good fighting performance but Innes proved to be too strong on the night.
John Lynch (1129) 0, Agnijo Banerjee (1453) 1
John well out graded but not in play. Yes John gave a good account of himself and maybe should have had a draw but for one mistake near the end (Rook placement!) which Agnijo jumped at and duly punished John for!
ROUND 2 DRAW
The draw for round 2 of the Random Knockout was done by Ray Noble, ably assisted by Andy Rowe and Innes Ford. The draw is now up on our website and the deadline is Thurs 24th May 18. Some nice pairings to look forward too!
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT
A reminder that next Thurs 19th April is Club Championship night, round 5 (last!).
Well that’s it for another night at a packed Castlehill Chess Club Dundee. As Vera Lynn would sing, “Well meet again!”
