CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 10th May 2018
Like last week we only had use of the common room and library, etc. It was less busy this week which to be honest helped under the circumstances. Anyway we still packed a lot in with some summer 1st round matches, a simul and some junior coaching using our magnetic demonstration chess board at last!
Ray Noble was the coach for this week (bricking it!) in the first of hopefully many teacher type coaching using the demonstration board.
Ray covered a few of the basic things like:
- How the pieces move and their relative values.
- The 4 elements of chess (Space; Material; Development & Time)
- Special moves (En Passant; Promotion & Castling)
- Basic Tactics (pins; relative & absolute! forks; skewers; double attacks; discovered checks & double checks)
- Check versus checkmate.
Ray then played six juniors in a simul (not Ray’s strong point!). Ray won 4; drew one and lost one match to Ramit Kanodia J10. Well played everyone (even Ray!) and great result Ramit!
The coaching using the magnetic board, plus the simul seemed to go down well. It is hoped we could do this on a monthly basis.
