CHESS NEWS REPORT – 30th July 2020
GLORNEY INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR FESTIVAL 2020
It`s been hard going for the Scotland teams in what is a very strong line up from the other countries! Out graded on all boards by all the teams so far, it has been a steep learning curve for our juniors.
Ben Volland J16 one of our better players has played in 3 matches so far and lost all of them! I don`t remember that happening before! Remarkably, Ben`s first match was against an FM! I know it stands for “Fide Master” but another rude two word phrase came to mind when I first seen this!
Rishi Vijayakumar J8 has played two matches so far. He lost the first one in a tight match and in the second one, Rishi was well out played and in a totally lost game, with King and two pawns against a Queen; 2 rooks and a Knight, but would not resign!
Black should have played 49….Qd4, but instead played Rg1?? This gave Rishi the excellent g6+ and no matter what black does, it`s stalemate!
Well they say you don`t learn if you give up and in this case it was very true as Rishi`s opponent who must have been very upset at the time, fell for the stalemate! This is the 2nd time in 3 weeks I have seen someone winning by a country mile and getting stalemated!
Scotland have played Netherlands, Ireland & Belgium and face Wales today and England tomorrow in the last match. You can get the links for the matches on the Chess Scotland website. Alternatively you can search for Ben or Rishi`s matches if playing using their usernames:

CASTLEHILL SUMMER FUN ONLINE
The new Summer Fun Online tournament has 10 entries which is a little disappointing, but a start! This is a 4 round Swiss event played online at Lichess on a Monday night. Time-control is: 90 minutes both players, no increments. Just like the OTB Summer.
The 1st round produced one shocking result (Marten Kats beating Ray Noble) and one shock(ish) result (Ed Walton taking down Robert Jackson!). Both the winners deserved their wins with some very good moves! Trevor Harley also had his chance to beat the number one seed, James Anderson, but just seemed to lose his way somewhere?
Round 2 has one match still to play, but already it`s not looking good for Ray Noble who is having a nightmare of a tournament! He was paired against the excellent junior Rishi Vijayakumar J8, who had something else on, the scheduled match night, so both agreed to play another day during the day. As fate would have it, Ray`s wife was unwell that day and Ray forgot all about the match! After going to get a prescription, Ray was on the bus home when he checked his emails and saw one from Rishi`s mum asking what happened. Ray challenged Rishi while on the bus which turned out to be a mistake in the end!
(Anyone remember Max Bygraves? “I want to tell you a story!)
Ray was white and played 1e4, Rishi replied e6. Now Ray played 2 Nf3 or should I say he thought he did, but once he touched the f3 square, it was not his Knight that moved but the f2 pawn…Disastrous! In chat apologising to Rishi for forgetting about the match, Ray told Rishi about his error. Rishi to his credit for one so young, did offer a take back, but Ray refused, saying, “It was his mistake by accident and he had to live with it.”. By the time Ray got home and switched over to a computer, he was getting well beaten as Rishi never let him back in the game after that mistake!
“Never play on a small phone on a moving bus..Lesson learnt!”
Quote by Ray Noble
All other results went to form, but Marten Kats gave James Anderson a fight, even a fright, but Jim held his nerve just!
Round 3 take place on Monday 17th August 2020, 7:30pm
Well that`s the end of this report for now. “I`ll be back!“
