CASTLEHILL ONLINE THURS NIGHT TOURNAMENT
Thurs 14th May 2020
For the first time on “lichess.org” we had a 15 minute, 4 round Swiss event (New to lichess and still in Beta mode!). Nine players took part which meant one player each round had to take a bye and wait for the next round. But then again that is what happens in OTB tournaments as well!
A big thank you to Declan Shafi for running the tournament and keeping us up to date on all aspects of the competition and lichess.org. Also congratulations to Declan for winning the first lichess Swiss event!
It seemed to go well and I think Declan plans to alternate weekly between Swiss (15 minutes) and Rapid Play (5 mins+3 sec). Declan will keep us up to date as we go.
Ray Noble did not have a good tournament at all! He got the first bye, then lost all of his 3 matches! Not only that, but with 11 seconds left on his clock against Keith Rose and having been on the wrong end of it, Ray found himself with some counter-play after a small error by Keith. Not realising he might have checkmate in a few moves, he went to offer a draw (time running out!), but pressed the “wrong button” and resigned instead!
Ray had just played 43. f7+!
43……..Kg7: 44. f8=Q#
43…….Kf8: 44. Qh8+ Ke7: 45. f8=Q+ Kd6: 46. Qf6#: Best was 43……Qxf7 and just win on time! Unless you can see something else?
Oh that must have hurt! Keith deserved the win, but what a way to get it!
Hopefully we we have some other events on the go ASAP, but we still have a lot to sort out. Keep checking our website and Facebook sites for up to date info on all Castlehill events and news.
Once again thank you Declan and please if you have any thoughts on our online chess club, please let us know. It`s the only way we can improve the service we are trying to offer you our members!
See you all next Thursday!
