CASTLEHILL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS OTB 2021-22
Round 3 report
For the most part results went to form book, but there is always one and this round was no exception!
New junior member Sean Lewis J13 with the white side beat Mr Colin “War of attrition” Young (1354)! Not sure what happened but regardless what a shock result! Well played Sean against one of the most difficult players to break down! One to watch along with the other juniors we have at Castlehill!
There were a few defaults this round which is always disappointing but considering how things have gone the last two years not unexpected.
Leyton Hackney (1554) beat Ray Noble (1526) in a humdinger of a match. Ray got an early advantage with a Bishop for two pawns, but Leyton did get some compensation for it! Leyton kept Ray on his toes causing him all sorts of problems! Time was an issue as well and indeed the deciding issue but not the way it was expected. Leyton was the player with about 3 minutes left, while Ray had about 12 minutes. Leyton had stopped writing down the moves and kept fighting his ground.
Just as Ray fell for a fork combination to bring the game back to a level, Ray looked at his clock and saw he only had 38 seconds left? Where had all his time gone? To run salt into the wound, he had been writing his moves down all the time. This proved to be the killer and Ray lost on time! What a fighting defence from Leyton which deserved at least a draw, but in the end got the win! Ray you need to manage your time better, you can’t afford “granny naps” anymore, your no spring chicken!
After 3 rounds our Junior sensation, Rishi Vijayakumar J10 leads the way on 3 points, with Alastair Dawson and Leyton Hackney close on his coattails on 2½ points!
The round four draw is now up on our website (see link below) and match night is Thursday 26th May 2022, 7:30pm at Castlehill Chess Club rooms.
Good luck to all players!
