14 players took
part in the second Ian McNab Memorial Allegro themed opening tournament
held on Thursday 29th April at Castlehill Chess Club.
This years theme
was 1. g4 The Grob! Black could answer in any manner.
Format: 5 round
Swiss, 15 minutes each player.
This
opening certainly put players on unfamiliar territory and made for some
wild matches. This may not be the Chess World Championships but it was
just as exciting seeing players struggle from the white side of things!
Congratulations go to Andy Paulin & Jim Anderson on finishing on 4/5. Andy had won his first 3 matches but lost in round four to the
number 1 seed and tournament favorite Colin Edwards. This let Jim Anderson
back in who had lost to Andy in round 3.
This
competition has a tie-break rule, so Andy Paulin gets 1st place with Jim
Anderson runner-Up.
Andy
was carrying on from were he left off last year when finishing runner-up
to Ed Spencer in the 1st Memorial.
Thanks
to all who took part. I am sure Ian would have loved to play in this had
he still been with us.
See
you all next year when the opening will be from
Blacks side.

Champion
Runner up
Congratulations
to Ed Spencer (Dundee & Victoria) for winning the inaugural Ian McNab
Memorial 2009.
With 14 players
taking part in what turned out to be a very Ian McNab night.
We had noise
from a Girls party down stars, loud analysis of matches, drink, late arrivals
and the Latvian Gambit! What more could you ask for.
Colin
McNab GM (Ian`s brother) turned up to support the event but did not take
part in the matches. Ed was on superb form and fully deserved his victories
and this trophy. I would like to thank all participating players and Colin
for making this a night to remember Ian McNab. The only thing missing was
someone to sing Stairway to Heavan (Rolf Harris) or My Way (Sex Pistols)!
Thanks
also go the the Stobswell Sports & Recreation club for venue and
Trident Trophies for an excellent Trophy and price!
