4NCL (Nations Chess League) Round 5 reports!

March 23, 2022NewsBy Ray Noble

4NCL (Nations Chess League)
Dundee City teams are a joint venture between Castlehill Chess Club Dundee and Dundee Chess Club.

SEASON 5 – ROUND 5 (7 rounds in total)

Tuesday 22nd March 22 – 7:30pm
Time-Control: 45 minutes + 15 seconds increments

Over the 5 teams Dundee City did well with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss! Still everything to play for almost all our teams with 2 rounds to go!

Division One – Group D
Kent KJCA Kestrels (1851) 0 – 4 (2113) Dundee City A
Kent KJCA Kestrels shot themselves in the foot being a player down, and it turned out to be a comfortable win with some sticky patches in it for Dundee City A!

Stephen Hogg (2015) for a change had no work to do as no show from his opponent. Well played Jacques Ophoff (2260); Declan Shafi (2082), Ed Spencer (2098) and of course Mr Hogg!

This leaves Dundee City A in second place on 8 points, 1 point and 3½ board points behind leaders Schach Attack who we have already played against ending in a draw! Dundee City A`s last two opponents are well within their range to win both matches (Nothing ever guaranteed), but they will need a helping hand from someone else to catch the leaders! This has been a good campaign so far from Dundee City A team!

Division Two – Group D

Dundee City B (1914) 3 – 1 (1794) Morriston Alekhine
Another great performance from Dundee City B, who came through the complications to get the win. Morriston Alekhine made them work for it but Dundee City B were just too strong in the end! Well played Alan Borwell (1936), Ross Bremner (1996); Andre Babin (1863) & Richard Kynoch (1862)!

This puts Dundee City B in 2nd place on 8 points, equal with leaders Barnet Knights A (also on 8 pts), but 2½ board points behind them. The best news for Dundee City B is it is still in their own hands to finish top as they still have to play Barnet Knights A (1st) and Cornish Choughs (3rd).

Division Four – Group B
Wessex Some Stars E (1700) 2 – 2 (1865) Dundee City C
This was a bruising battle with both sides leaving nothing in the tank. It could have gone either way but in the end all square! Alastair Dawson some how ended up in a rook pawn ending after going a piece down only for his opponent to sack it back! A pawn down in R+P ending, Alastair fought well to hold the position! Wessex Some Stars E deserved the draw but nearly sneaked the win!
Well played Graham Mooney (1880), Dariusz Kosznik (1867), Alastair Dawson (1846) & Sir Philip Cohen (1870).

Dundee City C sit top of the group on 9 points, 3 clear of Wessex Some Stars E! As long as they can field a full side in their last two matches, they should finish top of their group and reach the semi-final play-off`s!

Division Four – Group D

Dundee City D (1605) 3½ – ½  (1414)Wells Globetrotters
A comfortable win if ever there is such a thing for Dundee City D against Wells Globetrotters. Mind you James Anderson`s game was anything but comfortable as he was a piece down and looking like losing when his opponent played a bad move and allowed Jim a cheapo threefold repetition to get out of jail!

James opponent just played 30.Qf4?? (30.f3 better)

30……Qh3! 31.Kf3 (not 31.Kg1 Qh1#), …Qh5#, 32.Kg2 etc!

His opponent must have been sick, but give James some credit for spotting it! You can take the man out of Dundee, but you can`t take Dundee out of the man!

Well played Ray Flood (1623), Jan Barron-Majerik (1573), Leyton Hackney (1557) & James Anderson (1630)!

Dundee City D sit top of group D on 8 points by ½ a board point from Streatham B and are on course to finish top. The important thing here is it’s still in their own hands with 2 rounds to go!

Division Five

Cork B (1152) 3 – 1 (1538) Dundee City E

This looked a bad loss grading wise but when you looked at the Lichess grading`s instead, maybe not as bad? None the less a disappointing result but one in which Dundee City E can bounce back from! Subhayu Banerjee was our only winner on the night thankfully stopping the whitewash! Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason it just happens and we move on to the next battle! Well played Cork B who were deserved winners!

Unlucky Rishi Vijayakumar J10, Robert Jackson (1575), Kit McEvoy Gould (1519) & Subhayu Banerjee (1519)!

This leaves Dundee City E in 11th place on 5 points with just two matches left!

Round 6 takes place in two weeks time on Tuesday 5th April 22, 7:30pm.
