4NCL (Four Nation League) Round 7 report

April 21, 2022NewsBy Ray Noble

4NCL (Nations Chess League)
Dundee City teams are a joint venture between Castlehill Chess Club Dundee and Dundee Chess Club.

SEASON 5 – ROUND 7 (7 rounds in total)
Tuesday 19th April 22 – 7:30pm

Time-Control: 45 minutes + 15 seconds increments

Div 1 – Group D
Shropshire and Friends 2 (1869) 1½ – 2½ ( 2113) Dundee City A
Shropshire and Friends may have finished in 7th place but they did not play like that against Dundee City A! What a tight fighting match and what a performance by Dundee City A not only to win this match ( 3 draws and one win by Ed Spencer!), but to finish in 2nd place in group D, ahead of Scottish superstars “ALBA” who finished third! I would say the best performance/campaign Dundee City A has had. This really was an outstanding league campaign by Dundee City A! Group D winners Schach Attack on 13 points could only draw with Dundee City A in their round one match!

Div 2 – Group D
Dundee City B (1914) ½ – 3½ (2166) Barnet Knights A
On the night Dundee City B were out graded and out played by the better team simple as that! Great fighting chess by all players, especially Andre Babin on board 3 who stopped the white wash with a draw! Despite that loss it is still congratulations to Dundee City B on finishing in runners-up spot on 10 points, two behind group winners Barnet Knights A on 12 points. This means they are “PROMOTED” to division one next season! What an amazing achievement by Dundee City B! It will be tough in division one but that’s why you play chess!

Div 4 – Group B
Guildford Castles 2 (1673) 2½ – 1½ (1798) Dundee City C
Congratulations to Dundee City C who top group B in division one despite losing their last match against Guildford Castles 2! What can you say! What a stunning league campaign! Finishing top on 11 points, one ahead of Wessex Some Stars E, Dundee City C have qualified for the knockout section to decide who will be the division four champions! Not only that as they are promoted to division three! Top team, top players and one hell of a season 5 campaign!

Div 4 – Group D
Dundee City D (1605) 2 – 2 (1707) Plymouth 2
It just gets better and better as Dundee City D draw their last match to reach the knockout stages along with Dundee City C to decide who will be this season’s division four champions! They also finished top of the group after Streatham B lost their last match! To top it off, like Dundee City C, they are promoted to division three in the next campaign! Well played lads and what a nice finish by Ray Flood to win his match on board one!

Div 5 – Swiss
Crowthorne B (1149) 0 – 4 (1534) Dundee City D
You can`t ask better than that to finish off your league campaign with a convincing 4 – 0 victory. Yes grading wise that was the probably result, but many a banana skin has befallen a team in that position so well played! That fantastic result pushed Dundee City E into 3rd place in the league on 9 points (4 teams on 9 pts) with 19½ board points, meaning they finish ½ a board point above the other three teams! While no league title it is enough to gain promotion to division four! Outstanding league campaign by Dundee City E! Truly amazing results and performances to gain promotion!

What was achieved on the night? You could say, two wins, 1 draw, 2 losses yes, but put another way, four promotions to a higher division and still two teams in with a chance to become champions of their division. Wow! Now that is what you call out of this world!

The semi-finals take place on the 3rd May, draw’s still to be confirmed (below predicted draw based on 4NCL rules, with the two Dundee City teams missing each other in the semi`s TBC). We will be there to support all Dundee City teams in their quest for division titles!

Semi-Final Draw (TBC)
Jurassic Coast v Dundee City D
Sheffield Uni 70`s Graduates v Dundee City C?
