FIDE ONLINE OLYMPIAD – UPDATE – 17/08/20
Division Two – Pool E – 14th to 16th August 2020 – Chess.com
Scotland preformed well against all the odds, but the odds were very much stacked against them! Pool E proved to be full of teams who`s combined grading strength was unbelievably strong.
Round 7: Scotland 1 – 5 Bolivia
Declan (2166) was up against an IM 2316 an lost, while Monica Espinosa (1563) got a great draw against a 1901.
Round 8: Costa Rica 3 – 3 Scotland
This was one I think Scotland were looking to win, but all credit to Costa Rica in getting the draw!
Not sure how accurate the grades are with Declan drawing with a 1331? Did not see the game (family stuff) so don`t know what happened?
Round 9: Scotland 2 – 4 Mexico
Declan got another titled player, FM (2123), but closer to his own grade, but it was just one of those tournaments and the FM won!
Brutal schedule and time control against very strong opponents, but what an experience for all involved. Scotland finished bottom of the group on 3 points, while Hungary pipped England to top spot on a tie-break (16 points each).
Scotland’s best player was Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant (2282) unbeaten on 4½/5! Declan Shafi (2166), points wise (2/7) did not look to have had a good Olympiad and I am sure he would have wanted to do better, but when you look at who he has played, it was a better performance than it looked on paper!
The highlight for Declan must have been playing against, England legend and 3 times British Champion, David Howell (2785). What an experience and what a jump up in class, a totally different world and game up there!
White: David Howell GM (2785) – Black: Declan Shafi (2166) – 35.Qxf7

To get to represent your country at an Olympiad must be a proud moment in any chess players career and I am sure Declan will remember this for a long time. On behalf of all our members at Castlehill Chess Club Dundee. Well done Declan!
